LINDALE, Tx — Southwest Junior College Football Conference coaches and media members convened Friday for their annual Media Day luncheon at Garden Valley Golf Resort.
Each of the eight head coaches sized up his team’s prospects, discussed strengths, fielded questions and also shared 2017 preseason guides and schedules during the 10 am meeting.
Polls by the SWJCFC Coaches and also by the media were unveiled. Both 2017 polls suggested the memory of an air-tight 2016 regular season conference schedule remained fresh on groups’ minds. Last year, there was a four-way tie for second place among teams that finished 4-3, and a two-way deadlock for sixth between squads that finished 3-4.
Coaches and media members agree that TVCC is the 2017 league favorite. Both poll groups, following the 2016 theme, created a jumble of teams possibly to land in the second- through sixth-place positions.
Coach Cody Crill’s Navarro Bulldogs were picked third in the coaches poll, and fourth in the media ranking. The Bulldogs return eight offensive and three defensive starters from a 6-3 non-playoff qualifying team that finished on a three-game winning streak and ranked No. 9 nationally.
