TYLER — Round 1 went to Tyler, on a penalty kick.
Top-ranked Tyler’s Deborah Maciel netted a penalty kick at 28:43 of the second half and the Apache Ladies held off fifth-ranked Navarro 1-0 Wednesday in a Region XIV and NJCAA battle of unbeaten soccer programs at Pat Hartley Field.
The teams clash in another regular-season match scheduled at 4 pm Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Navarro College’s campus pitch.
Coach Corey Rose’s TJC squad won its 10th straight game while coach Alicia Wilson’s Bulldogs suffered their first loss in 10 outings. With the victory, TJC assumes first place in Region XIV with a perfect 3-0 record, while the second-place Bulldogs (3-1) slip behind by one-half game.
Maciel’s goal was her fourth of the season, and second game-winner.
TJC goalkeeper Andrea Neves made five saves (four during the second half) and registered her fourth shutout of the season.
TJC managed only seven shots on goal against Navarro goalkeeper Maitane Bravo.
