Double-doubles spark NC’s roll to 5th straight win

Navarro basketball concluded a successful two-win weekend at The 7th Annual Lewis Orr Classic with wins Friday over Fort Hood (86-77) and Saturday over Cy Fair Learning Center (97-78) at the Wolens SEC.

Coach Michael Landers’ Bulldogs remain unbeaten after five games, and are off to the program’s best start since the 2009-2010 season.

In Saturday’s dominating win over CFLC, the Bulldogs shot 44.7 percent of their 85 shots from the floor, placed five in double-figure scoring for the second straight outing, and cleared a whopping 65 rebounds.  Of the Bulldogs’ 65 boards, 26 were of the offensive variety.

Orr Classic DoublesNavarro got double-doubles from freshmen Keion Epps and Darron Barnes,  Epps, from Inkster, Mi.,  totaled 19 points and a team-high 20 rebounds with four blocked shots — all coming during one sequence of second-half action.  Of his 20 boards, 13 were offensive.

Barnes, who had scored a total 17 points in his first four games, responded with an 18-point, 19-rebound contest.

Emmanuel Egbuta pumped in 16 points from 6-of-11 shooting with seven rebounds for the Bulldogs, which battled from behind to take a 51-49 halftime lead they never relinquished.

Jahlil Nails added 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting that included 3-of-6 firing from beyond the perimeter.

Kahssian Kay, a Philadelphia freshman, hit 10 points, grabbed three rebounds and issued six assists.

Navarro next plays Region V’s Southwestern Christian Rams at 5 pm Friday in first-round action of the Cardinal Classic at Trinity Valley in Athens.
