Time running out after 7-hour doubleheader loss?

After a near seven-hour doubleheader softball loss here Friday, time may be running out on the Navarro Bulldogs in their quest to secure one of the four East Zone berths for the Region XIV Tournament.

Coach Jessica Karenke-Burke’s Bulldogs (23-19/12-10) will play four road games among their six-game conference schedule this week against three other teams mathematically in contention.  Two of the series this week have been re-scheduled for weeks through a season that’s been ravaged by inclement weather.

In last week’s schedule shuffling, the Bulldogs had to cope with four doubleheaders in six days (Sunday, April 15-Friday, April 20), and managed only a 4-4 outcome against Northeast, Paris and TVCC twice. Of the four games played last week at Cummings Field, the Bulldogs went 1-3.

Their backs are squarely against the wall now.

Navarro plays Monday against second-place Bossier Parish (36-10/17-5) at Bossier, La., — originally set as one of the zone-opening doubleheaders way back on March 10.  The Bulldogs have their regularly scheduled twinbill Wednesday at Kilgore (18-22/11-13) against the Lady Rangers at the year-old Ballpark at KC Commons.  Finally, on Saturday — Region XIV’s final day of regular-season games — NC will host Angelina (27-14/15-7) in a pair of games originally set here on April 7.

From a noon Friday start, it took an incomprehensible six hours and 51 minutes to play a total of 14 innings of softball — five in the first game and nine in the nightcap. Meanwhile, at adjacent Graham Field, Navarro and Bossier Parish began their seven- and nine-inning baseball doubleheader one hour later — and finished both games almost 90 minutes earlier than softball.

TVCC (25-22/12-10) won games by 22-13 and 8-7 counts, claimed a fourth-place conference tie with Navarro and earned a possible tiebreaker edge by winning three of the four head-to-head games played between the teams.

The Cardinals, which split Wednesday at Tyler after a 5-0 nightcap win, now carry a three-game winning streak into final-week play.  The Cardinals host Angelina on Monday, Northeast on Wednesday and play Friday at Bossier Parish.

Friday’s Results
TVCC 22-8, Navarro 13-7  (1st game 5; 2nd game, 9)
Angelina 11-11, Paris 1-3  (Both 5 innings)
Tyler 9-7, Northeast 5-3

Sunday’s Results
Bossier Parish 10-10, Kilgore 1-2
Tyler 6-7, Northeast 1-2
