Baseball, soccer teams earn NJCAA academic honor

COLORADO SPRINGS, Col. — Navarro baseball and soccer programs, plus 14 individual athletes were honored Wednesday as the NJCAA released its 2017-18 Academic Teams Of The Year.

Top academic teams with grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher are recognized annually. Individuals with GPAs of 3.60 or higher are selected as first-, second- njcaa cademicor third-team all-academic.

Coach Matt Podjenski’s Bulldog baseball team, featuring nine individual honorees, compiled a 3.19 GPA and were among 77 programs cited.  NC baseball made the academic list for the fifth consecutive season and sixth in the last seven.

Individual first-team honors went to 4.0 students Clayton Jones and Pepper Jones.  Five others — Austin Gross, Beau Orlando, Johnny Panatex, Trey Becerra and Colin Wyman — carried GPAs of 3.80-3.99 and were second-teamers.  Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo and Joseph Leal were third-team selections with GPAs of 3.60-3.79.

Coach Alicia Wilson’s Bulldog soccer team, highlighted by four top student-athletes, produced a 3.11 GPA and was among 56 programs honored. Navarro soccer earned team listing for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons.

A pair of 4.0 students, Brooke Davis and Sarah Mendoza, claimed first-team soccer honors, with second-teamer Maitane Bravo and third-teamer Andrea Rabanales.

Softball’s Taylor Goulet earned second-team individual honors.
