TYLER — Hitomi Kono’s free-kick goal with 14:30 left in the first half provided the only score as 2017 national champion and third-ranked Tyler edged No. 1 ranked Navarro, 1-0, on the artificial turf of Pat Hartley Field.
The win moves TJC to 15-1-1 on the season and 9-1 in conference play, deadlocked with coach Alicia Wilson’s Bulldogs (11-1-1). Tyler’s win avenged a 3-2 loss to Navarro in Corsicana on September 26.
Navarro, ranked No. 1 three consecutive weeks since its win in Corsicana, saw streaks of 10 consecutive match wins and 12 matches unbeaten come to an end.
Kono, a sophomore midfielder, scored her 15th goal of the year and TJC made it stand up for a sixth straight win.
Navarro and Tyler now have met 33 times since the series began in 2008. There have been 17 matches decided by one goal and there have been nine 1-0 classics between the teams. Four of the last five matches they’ve played were 1-0 decisions.
Both teams now are wrapping up their regular seasons and building toward the Region XIV Tournament. Working around a rain forecast, TJC has a make-up game scheduled Thursday at Paris and a home match Saturday against Jacksonville. Navarro has matches Sunday and Monday against Jacksonville.
