NC-Angelina Soccer Semifinal set Thursday night at Ennis

The Region XIV Women’s Soccer Semifinal between Navarro and Angelina will be played at 7:30 pm Thursday at Lion Memorial Stadium in Ennis.

Navarro (13-1-1), as the second seed, hosts the semifinal, but continued rains here have forced the Bulldogs to move this match to an available artificial-surfaced pitch.

The match will be Navarro’s second at night this season and first at Ennis — a city about 25 miles north of Corsicana on I-45 and within the college’s service area.

Navarro enters the contest ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA and No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches Polls.

Third-seeded Angelina (13-5) is ranked No. 19 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.

Navarro’s beaten the Roadrunners six times in as many meetings dating back to 2016. The Bulldogs won regular-season contests 3-2 at The Roark Montgomery Soccer Complex in Corsicana on Wednesday. Sept. 18 and 1-0 at Jase Magers Field in Lufkin on Friday, Oct. 12.

The Navarro-Angelina match will feature some of Region XIV’s top players.

Teammates Wasila Diwura and Valentina Carvajal of NC, and Jerrisa Grimes of Angelina are the league’s top goal scorers (17 each). Diwura leads the league in points (49) and shots (75), plus ranks second to teammate Andrea Rabanales in assists (15). Carvajal is second in points (43) and shots (67), plus fourth in assists (9).

Navarro goalie Maitane Bravo has allowed only four goals all season and possesses an .846 save percentage. AC goalie Aubrey Pettett is second in saves (82) and save percentage (.820) and her goals-against average is third (1.33).

Thursday’s other Region XIV semifinal pairs fourth-seeded Northeast Texas (7-7-1) and top-seeded Tyler (17-1-1) at 5 pm at TJC’s Pat Hartley Field.

Winners from Thursday’s semifinals will advance to Sunday’s Region XIV Championship game that will be played at the home of the highest-remaining seed.
