Navarro Volleyball celebrated Sophomore Day and completed its regular season Saturday by overpowering 13th-ranked Hill, 3-0.

Four sophomore members of coach Ronda Shirley’s team were recognized for their efforts in leading the 34-3 Bulldogs to national prominence and the program’s highest-ever ranking at No. 3.  Sophomores Hannah Barosh, Viktoria Velika, Luana Almeida and Bailey Foy were featured during pre-match festivities at the Wolens SEC.

All four played major roles in the match as the Region XIV East Zone champions dismantled the Region V Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) Champions.  Navarro disposed of the 13-ranked Lady Rebels by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-9, won its 10th straight match, 16th in its last 17, and recorded its 24th sweep of the season.

Before Saturday, Hill (24-6) had beaten Navarro in three consecutive five-game matches. Hill beat the Bulldogs in the second match of this season at the Rose City Invitational in Tyler by rallying from a 2-0 deficit.  The Rebels came here on a seven-match winning streak with sweeps in six of their previous seven matches and completed an unbeaten, 10-match NTJCAC season.

The Bulldogs protected the house Saturday

Barosh, Velika and Foy combined to account for 23 of Navarro’s 37 kills, and 58 of the Bulldogs’ 95 total attacks. Almeida and Barosh hit double figures in digs and combined for 28 of the team’s 50.  Almeida added three service aces.

Mix some freshman work with that, including a 35-assist, eight-dig, two-kill match from setter Emily Witt; a five-kill, two block-assist effort from frontliner Deja Arnold; and seven kills with a team-high 22 attacks from Natalie Garcia to complete the win.

Velika and Foy had a team-high nine kills apiece.

Navarro next will play in the Region XIV Tournament beginning Friday, Nov. 2 at Lee College in Baytown.
