November 4 and 5, 2018. Consider them ‘red-letter dates’ for NC.
On back-to-back calendar dates, Navarro College athletics earned NJCAA National Tournament Championship qualifications in two Division I sports.
Coach Ronda Shirley’s third-ranked volleyball team (37-4) defeated Trinity Valley for a fourth time this season and earned the school’s first-ever national volleyball tournament berth on Sunday at Lee College in Baytown. Navarro’s Region XIV runners-up will compete in the three-day, 12-team meet at The Sports Arena in Hutchinson, Ks., Nov. 15-17.
Then, on Monday, coach Alicia Wilson’s fifth-ranked Region XIV runners-up endured a long week of wait-and-see when the NJCAA selected them as an At-Large District qualifier for the NJCAA national women’s soccer tournament championship. The 14-2-1 Bulldogs will be making the program’s eighth national tournament appearance, and first under Wilson. The week-long, 12-team tournament will be played at the Foley Sports Complex in Foley, Al., Nov. 12-17.
The last time Navarro athletics produced multiple national qualifiers during a school year occurred in 2005 when soccer and softball advanced.
Navarro also had a big first during the 2010-2011 calendar school year when it claimed national championships in football and in baseball — the first to achieve that in the NJCAA men’s major team sports.
