05 Dec NJCAA, AVCA list Almeida on All-American VB squads
BY MIKE MONTFORT —
Sophomore libero Luana Almeida became Navarro volleyball’s second NJCAA All-American in as many seasons Monday.
Then on Wednesday, she became the first Bulldog volleyball player to earn All-America recognition on two teams, as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) named her as a third-team selection their squad.
The 5-9 sophomore from Rio de Janeiro was selected as an NJCAA second-team All-American after helping to lead Navarro to its winningest season (38-7), its highest ranking (No. 3), and a fourth-seed in its first national tournament.
Almeida follows the trail blazed last season by Carol Barbosa. Barbosa, now completing her junior year at Little Rock, was a first-team All-American after leading NC to a 27-12 record and the Region XIV Tournament semifinals.
Almeida led Navarro in matches played (45), sets played (155), digs (642) and service aces (48). She averaged 4.1 digs per set during the season. She also finished second in assists.
Almeida was chosen by Region XIV East Coaches as the zone’s Newcomer of the Year, the Libero of the Year and a member of the first-team all-conference squad.
