Pulliam drops career-high 30 in Bulldogs’ 81-66 win

By MIKE MONTFORT  –

Sophomore Trey Pulliam’s career-high 30 points sparked Navarro to an 81-66 Region XIV men’s basketball victory Wednesday over the Angelina Roadrunners at The Wolens SEC.

Pulliam sank 11-of-17 shots from the floor, including two three-pointers. In addition to hitting 64.7 percent from the field, he also was a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line as Navarro (11-1/3-0) won its ninth consecutive game and third in conference play.

The 6-foot-3 guard’s 30-point night was the fourth of the season by a Navarro player. Xavier Davenport had games of 33 against Temple November 20 and 31 against Fort Hood at The Lewis Orr Classic. James Jean-Marie also dropped 30 against Temple here November 6.

Pulliam also dished out five assists and claimed three steals — both categorical team-highs Wednesday.

Pulliam turned in the 20th double-figure scoring game of his Navarro career Wednesday. His previous high-game was 19 in a 79-68 win over Southwestern Christian last year at Athens.

The Bulldogs got 12 points from 5-of-9 shooting by Ja’Quaye James. Shakem Johnson and Gavin Kensmil each contributed 10 points and five rebounds. Johnson and Kensmil combined for 9-of-12 shooting from the floor.

Navarro hit 52.5 percent of its shots from the floor (31-of-59).

The Bulldogs led 39-36 at halftime, but two minutes into second half, Angelina assumed a 42-41 lead thanks to a pair of Draylon Brown free throws.

Navarro then exploded on a 15-4 run and assumed a 56-46 lead by the 12:39 mark. Pulliam keyed the surge with a three, a feed underneath to Kensmil, and later, a steal that resulted in Johnson’s easy breakaway bucket.

Despite as much as a 7-0 team-foul disadvantage midway through the second half, Navarro slowly widened its lead to 12 on James’ three-pointer (62-50), and to many as 19 by the three-minute mark.

The Bulldogs close the fall semester with a pair of non-conference games. They host the Lone Star-Cy Fair Falcons at 4 pm Saturday, and Louisiana Christian at 7 pm Tuesday, Dec. 11.
