‘Dogs carry 11-game win streak to semester break

BY MIKE MONTFORT

Shakem Johnson’s 26 points led five Bulldogs in double-figure scoring as Navarro (13-1/3-0) closed out the fall semester with its 11th straight victory — a 95-51 drubbing of the Louisiana Christian School Disciples.

Johnson, logging his third game of 25-plus scoring this season, sank 10-of-14 shots and led Bulldog rebounders with nine.

The Bulldogs’ 13-1 start is the team’s best since the 2009-10 campaign when Johnny Estelle’s club went 12-1 before Christmas of a school-record-equaling 30-7 season that ended with a fourth-place finish at the NJCAA Tournament.

Navarro’s current 11-game winning streak is the program’s longest since Estelle’s 2009-10 team fashioned a 13-game streak during its march into Hutchinson, Ks. That squad won its final eight regular-season, three Region XIV Tournament and two NJCAA Tournament games in succession.

Trey Pulliam and Ja’Quaye James each hit 14 points Tuesday for Navarro, which shot 53 percent from the floor (38-of-72) and cruised to the easy victory.

Pulliam’s 14 came from 6-of-7 shooting. He led the team in assists for the seventh straight game, totaling five.
James was part of a 30-point bench brigade Tuesday, contributing his 14 from 5-of-8 shooting

Starters James Jean-Marie added 13 points and Nicholas Rene sank 10 points for NC, which raced to a 49-20 halftime lead.

Tuesday’s win marked the 13th time in 14 outings that Navarro’s placed at least four players in double-digit scoring.

NC stole 13 passes and blocked seven shots during the game. The seven blocked shots came off the bench from Gavin Kensmil (3), Jonah Carrasco (2) and Sherman Robinson and Ashley Mukendi (1 each).

Navarro will return the week after Christmas to resume workouts for its 3 pm Friday, January 4 Region XIV conference game at Beeville against the Coastal Bend Cougars.
