—  Region XIV East Zone leader Navarro got double-figure scoring from five players in its 78-60 win here Saturday over the Paris Dragons.

Sophomore Gavin Kensmil joined Jean James-Marie as Bulldogs with five double-doubles this season. Kensmil scored 10 points, cleared a team-high 12 rebounds and blocked a shot for the 23rd-ranked Bulldogs (18-2/8-1). It was Kensmil’s second double-double in conference play — the most recent of 22 points and 12 rebounds coming two weeks ago in a 77-75 win over Lamar State at Port Arthur.

Kensmil, second in NJCAA field-goal shooting percentage at 73.7, scored the bulk of his points Saturday from the foul line with a 6-of-9 effort to go with a modest 2-of-5 shooting chart.

Shakem Johnson, who is third among NJCAA players in field-goal shooting percentage at 72.7, turned in his team-high 16th double-figure scoring game by totaling 15 points from 7-of-10 shooting Saturday. Johnson added six rebounds and blocked two PJC shots.

Freshman guard Ja’Quaye James bucketed a team-high 21 points in the win — his fourth game of 20-plus scoring this season. James went 7-of-11 from the floor, including 5-of-8 beyond the arc. James also managed three rebounds, three assists and a steal as the Bulldogs improved their record at Lewis Orr Court to 11-1.

Trey Pulliam also turned in another solid floor game with 12 points, six rebounds and four steals.

The Bulldogs closed halves with a fury Saturday.

Navarro’s offense went cold for almost five minutes in the first half, and Paris managed to turn a five-point deficit into its only lead (26-25) with 4:09 to play. From there, the Bulldogs scored the final 16 and cruised into a halftime lead for the 19th time in 20 outings.

Similarly, in the second half, PJC battled to cut Navarro’s lead to 10 (67-57) with 4:35 to go. From there, the Bulldogs went on an 11-3 romp to the finish, featuring Johnson’s three-point play, free throws by James and Kensmil, and Pulliam’s runner in the paint.
