3 teams, 29 athletes academic All-Americans

Three Navarro College teams and 29 NC student-athletes were recognized Monday by the NJCAA for individual and team academic achievements during the 2018-19 school year.

Academic Team honors, for maintaining GPAs of 3.0 or higher, went to Navarro Soccer (3.35), Volleyball (3.18), and Softball (3.09).
The 29 individual awards went to Navarro student-athletes who maintained grades of 3.60 or higher during the school year. The NJCAA broke down GPAs into ranges in order to designate first-team (4.00), second-team (3.80-3.99) and third-team (3.60-3.79) status.

As a result. Navarro had nine first-, eight second- and 12 third-team Academic All-Americans.

The nine NC student athletes carrying 4.0s were baseball’s Pepper Jones and Trey Becerra, football’s Jared DeFelice and Michael Massarella, volleyball’s Luana Almeida and Monica Wood, softball’s Jada Woolley and Madison Pond, and soccer’s Maitane Bravo.

Second-team honors (3.80-3.99) went to baseball’s Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo, Gage Walters, Ryan Johnston and Colin Wyman, volleyball’s Deja Arnold, softball’s Makensie Miller and Jessa Johnson, and soccer’s Alyssa Williams.

Third-teamers (3.60-3.79) recognized include baseball’s Dylan Chapman, Kyle Hawkins and Riley Lambert, basketball’s Gavin Kensmil and Jonah Carrasco, football’s Abraham Beauplan and Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu, volleyball’s Sydney Gelsthorpe, and soccer’s Paityn Bretzer, Taylor Lockwood, Vianey Rivera and Wasila Diwura.

By sport, baseball had the most NJCAA Academic All-Americans (9). followed by soccer (6), football, volleyball and softball (4 each), and basketball (2).
