Landis throws 5 TDs in 38-33 win over NC

By MIKE MONTFORT

Brock Landis threw for 463 yards and five touchdowns to lift 18th-ranked Blinn to a 38-33 Southwest Junior College Football Conference win Saturday over the Navarro Bulldogs.

Landis completed 31-of-43 attempts, including touchdowns of 95, 10 and 1 yards to Danny Gray, who snagged a game-high 14 balls for 202 yards.  Landis, the NJCAA TD passing leader with 13 through three games, also fired scoring passes of 74 to Xavier Hutchinson and two to Trea Shropshire.

The Buccaneers (2-1, 1-1) bounced back from their 27-24 conference-opening loss at home to secure a big road win on Military Appreciation Night at Tiger Stadium.

Navarro dropped its third straight game overall and second in conference play.  The Bulldogs have lost their first three games of a season for the first time since 2003.  Coach Scott Parr’s Bulldogs scored 30-plus points in defeat for a third straight week.

Freshman quarterback Dodge Delozier, who began the season as No. 3 on the depth charts, stepped into his first start and led the Bulldogs to 415 yards offense.  The lefthander ran one yard for a touchdown two minutes before the end of the first half and threw for two second-half scores.

Delozier completed 26-of-38 for 262 yards,  with scoring strikes of 16 yards to Alex Washington and four to Troy Edwards, Jr., that pulled NC within five (38-33) with 2:20 to play.

Freshman Isaiah Robinson became Navarro’s first 100-yard rusher of the season with a 16-carry, 110-yard effort that included the game’s first score on a three-yard run.

Defensively, Brendon Luper led NC with 16 tackles.  Linebacker Abraham Beauplan added nine tackles with 1 1/2 tackles for loss and defensive back Elijah Hunter was in on eight stops.

Navarro hosts coach Thomas Rocco’s Tyler Apaches for a 7 pm Saturday SWJCFC game at Tiger Stadium.
