By MIKE MONTFORT

—  Shorthanded Navarro pulled away with 28 fourth-quarter points Saturday to secure a 69-41 non-conference victory over the Texas A&T Drillers at Tiger Stadium.

Coach Scott Parr’s Bulldogs scored 21 points inside the final 7:34 to subdue the Drillers, who were led by quarterback Cedrick Montgomery’s 541 yards passing and four touchdown passes from 33-of-60 passing.

The game featured a combined 62 first downs, 991 passing yards, 1198 yards offense and 1526 total yards.  Texas A&T ran 18 more offensive plays than the Bulldogs (86-68) and accumulated eight more first downs than NC.

The first-down differential reflects in Texas A&T’s nine first-downs via penalty.  The Bulldogs were flagged 18 times Saturday for 188 yards in assessments.

Navarro managed to rack up season-highs in points, total offense (608) and total yardage (899).

Quarterbacks Parker McNeil and Dodge DeLozier, working each half, threw two touchdown passes apiece as three receivers totaled 100-plus yards:  Tru Edwards (4-151-1), Shadeed Ahmed (7-117-1) and Quinton Lee (7-107-0).

Freshman running back Brandon Theus totaled a personal-season high 144 yards on 23 carries and tallied three touchdowns (32, 13, and 3 yards)

Navarro’s defense produced two touchdowns.  Mason Kinsey’s 34-yard scoop-and-score fumble return with 5:35 left in the first period extended a Bulldog lead to 20-6.

During the final period, Tray Bishop picked off a Montgomery pass in the end zone and returned 101 yards as Navarro opened a 62-41 advantage with 4:29 left.

The returns by Kinsey and Bishop were part of NC’s 291 return yards Saturday.  Additionally, Brendon Luper picked off a Montgomery pass and brought it back 56 yards.

McNeil went 12-of-14 for 256 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.  He now owns Navarro career records for completions, yardage and touchdown passes.

NC returns to Southwest Junior College Football Conference play Saturday at the Wool Bowl in Roswell, N.M., where it faces the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos in a 3 pm CDT contest.
