Top Dogs: Navarro Volleyball ranked No. 1

For the first time in program history, Navarro Volleyball is ranked as NJCAA Division I’s No. 1 team.

Coach Andy Cavins’ Bulldogs (22-0/7-0) advanced Monday to the No. 1 position after sweeping Region XIV opponents Blinn and Lee last week, while Polk State’s Eagles saw their 20-match winning streak snapped Thursday in a 3-0 non-conference loss to Florida State College at Jacksonville.

Navarro now is one of two unbeaten programs in NJCAA Volleyball this season, and the only one remaining in Division I. The only other undefeated team is Division III’s fourth-ranked Fashion Institute of Technology Tigers (23-0) of New York City.

Coach Ronda Shirley’s 2018 Bulldogs achieved the school’s first No. 3 ranking and held that spot for the final two weeks of regular-season polling. Cavin’s Bulldogs, opening 2019 as the No. 8 team in the preseason poll, vaulted to No. 3 for two weeks before occupying the No. 2 slot for five consecutive polling periods (September 16-October 14).

Navarro completes its Region XIV regular season schedule on the road this week, playing Tuesday at Wharton and Friday at Victoria.
