TYLER — Top-ranked Region XIV Champion Navarro will return to the NJCAA Volleyball Tournament in Hutchinson, and as the NJCAA’s only remaining unbeaten, most assuredly will finish as the regular-season No. 1 team.
Coach Andy Cavins’ Bulldogs (27-0) used 10 sets in the process of steamrolling Coastal Bend, Lee and host Tyler to win the Region XIV Tournament and the designation as NJCAA Mid-South A District Champions.
Navarro and Region V NTJCAC winner Hill — programs separated by 40 miles — were the first of the 16 to qualify for the national tournament, scheduled November 21-23 at The Sports Arena.
The Bulldogs’ “Greatest Hits, Volume II” continued to be a smash last wekend at Wagstaff Gym. With 3-0 sweeps from Coastal bend and Lee on Friday, the Bulldogs ran their consecutive sweep count to six and 20 for the season.
Navarro, now with a .353 hitting percentage that ranks third nationally, got large, three-match kill totals from Jordan Lockwood (38), Deja Arnold (33), Monica Wood (26), Madison Schultz (16) and Aleksandra Rojecka (13).
Sophomore setter Emily Witt added consecutive assist-dig double-doubles of 35/13 against Lee and 44/12 against Tyler, bringing his 2019 total to 11 and her career mark to 25.
Carla Boudai averaged 21 digs per tournament match, including a personal-season high 28 against TJC.
Against TJC in the clincher, Navarro had 53 kills and 135 attacks, plus 76 digs in the 3-1 win. Arnold had a team-high 15 kills and eight block-assists, while Lockwood contributed 14 kills, four total blocks and nine digs.
Region XIV’s second representative at Hutch was crowned Sunday as coach Nicole Thorn’s third-seeded Panola Fillies (29-8) eliminated TJC, 3-1.
