Softball focuses on Cowtown Classic schedule

After Tuesday’s home-opening doubleheader against Temple was rained out, Navarro Softball began work for the Cowtown Classic at Fort Worth this weekend.

NC (3-1) is scheduled to play five games during the massive, two-day tournament.  On Friday, the Bulldogs are pencilled in to play Southwestern CC, Ia., at 11 a.m., Rose State College, Ok., at 3 pm, and Allen CC, Ks., at 7 pm.  Saturday’s pairings include Hutchinson, Ks., at 3 pm and Northern Oklahoma College-Enid at 7 pm.

Last weekend at Weatherford’s Coyote Chillout, coach Jessica Karenke-Burke’s Bulldogs rolled to successive wins over North Central Texas College, Cowley, Ks., and the host Coyotes. NC outscored NCTC’s Lions 13-7, run-ruled the Cowley Tigers in five innings, 12-3, and shut out Weatherford at Stuart Field, 2-0, Saturday afternoon.

The shutout gained a smattering of revenge over WC, which tallied late in the tournament opener Friday to hand the Bulldogs a 7-5 setback.

Lindsay Garner and Brooklyn Swacker combined on a five-hit shutout.

Garner spent 83 pitches and scattered five hits over six innings of work. She walked three batters and struck out one.

Swacker threw 10 pitches and turned in a  spotless seventh for NC.

Of Navarro’s seven hits off Weatherford’s route-going starter Destini Trahan, four were doubles. Three of the two-base hits figured prominently in the scoring.

The Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the third. Faith Fernandez doubled with one out, moved to third base on Madison Pond’s sacrifice bunt, and crossed home plate when Sarah Koeppen reached on an infield error.

Navarro added an insurance run in the fourth as Alanna Islas led off the inning with a double and came home on Bayja Newby’s two-out double.
