‘Dawgs prepare for Brazos JUCO Classic

By MIKE MONTFORT —

TEMPLE — Navarro split its doubleheader Saturday with the Temple Leopards, but claimed the weekend series and brought their season record to .500 after six games.

After Monday’s non-conference game against Wharton at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville was postponed by rain, the Bulldogs turned their attention to preparation for the inaugural Brazos JUCO Classic at College Station this weekend.

The three-day tournament hosted by the Texas Collegiate League’s Brazos Valley Bombers will be played at Travis Field.  NC won’t play until Saturday, but gets a pair of seven-inning challenges from Weatherford at 11:30 am and from Blinn at 7 pm.

On Sunday, the Bulldogs play nine-inning games against Howard at 1 pm and against Wharton at 4 pm.

All Brazos JUCO Classic games will be streamed live by TSRN Sports.

Coach Matt Podjenski’s Bulldogs followed up their 19-9 Friday win with a 4-3 victory in Saturday’s opener at Danny Scott Sports Complex.

TC prevailed 11-10 in the nightcap as Refugio freshman pitcher J’Mond LaFond struck out Dawson Woods and stranded the potential winning runs on base.

In that second game, Navarro wiped out a 7-2 Leopard lead and forced a tie in the seventh inning before TC regained an 11-7 lead only to see the Bulldogs rally again.

Riley Lambert and Stacey Bailey each homered in the second game for NC and Cash Rugely knocked in three runs in his season debut.

NC’s Blake Anderson shut the door on Temple’s first-game rally as the Bulldogs took a 4-3 win behind Jake Combs and Chad Ricker.

The Bulldogs pieced together five consecutive hits and scored three runs during a decisive four-run fourth inning. Woods had an RBI-single to right field, Kyle Hawkins added a two-run double, and Ethan Ruiz banged an RBI-single to right for the fourth inning’s final run.

Temple broke up the combined shutout bid by Combs and Ricker as pinch-hitter Tristan Pitkin hits a two-out, two-run double down the right field line in the bottom of the sixth.
