Softball to open zone play at BPCC, TVCC

Sunday’s non-conference doubleheader sweep here against Coastal Bend catapults Navarro Softball into its conference-opening doubleheaders this week at Bossier Parish and at TVCC.

Coach Jessica Karenke-Burke’s Bulldogs (10-10), winners of four of their last five, enter league play during spring break against perhaps the two hottest East Zone clubs right now.  BPCC (19-6) has won 12 consecutive games, while TVCC (17-6) has won seven in a row.

Navarro celebrated Sophomore Day last Sunday with 3-2 and 9-1 wins over the CBC Cougars (13-6), but a Monday doubleheader was cancelled by rain.

Summaries of Navarro’s sweep follow:

GAME 1 — Navarro 3, Coastal Bend 2
Jada Woolley’s tiebreaking, two-out double in the sixth brought home Faith Fernandez with what proved to be the game-winning run as the Bulldogs won Game 1.

Reliever Braylee Forse, working in her third inning, yielded a one-out single in the seventh but struck out two batters and nailed down the victory. Forse and starter Lindsay Garner combined on a four-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Fernandez went 1-for-3 at the plate and scored twice. Her hit was a leadoff home run to rightfield off a 3-2 pitch. Fernandez’ home run was her eighth of the season.

Navarro took a 2-0 lead in the third when Jenna Rude reached on a fielders’ choice grounder and scored on Madison Pond’s single to rightfield.

CBC parlayed two singles, two errors and a double into a game-tying fourth inning rally.

GAME 2: Navarro 9, Coastal Bend 1 (5 innings)
Jessa Johnson’s bases-loaded triple in the first and pinch-hitter Jenna Rude’s three-run homer in the fifth highlighted a pair of four-run outbursts and helped Navarro run-rule CBC to complete the sweep.

The Bulldogs pounded two CBC pitchers for nine hits, including three extra-base hits in the nightcap.

Winning starter Brooklyn Swacker spent 62 pitches in a two-hitter with three strikeouts.

NC trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the first until Johnson lined a bases-clearing triple into the rightfield corner, following Faith Fernandez’ leadoff single and walks to Sarah Koeppen and Alanna Islas.

Rude, batting for Harley Davis, smashed an 0-1 pitch for a three-run homer to right in the fifth — her first of the season. The homer came after Islas led off with a line double to center, and Jessa Johnson reached safely on a throwing error.

Pinch-hitter Ally McKendree ended the game with an run-scoring single.
