Series begins at BPCC with Thursday DH

By MIKE MONTFORT   (Updated 9 pm Wednesday)

—  Navarro Baseball sees a great opportunity.  This weekend, the Bulldogs want to seize it — wherever it presents itself.

Weekend forecasts suggest rain, so the  series with Bossier Parish is fluid.  It certainly was Wednesday after the baseball programs twice changed their plans about starting the three-game set.

East Zone co-leader NC (12-10/5-1), trying to duplicate last weekend’s sweep of Northeast and dodge bad weather at the same time, now will play a 1:30 pm Thursday doubleheader against the Cavaliers (7-8/1-5) at Bossier, La.

The nine-inning single Game 3 remains on the schedule here Saturday, but that may change.  Thursday’s long-range forecasts indicate the possibility of rain until next Wednesday.

Regardless, the Bulldogs can try to build on the momentum of a three-game winning streak, against a Cavalier squad that’s lost five straight and dropped to the bottom of the East Zone standings.

Here are summaries from last Sunday’s doubleheader sweep over Northeast Texas:

Navarro 5, Northeast 1
Sophomore lefthander Carson Rollins twirled his second complete game of the conference season, limiting Northeast to four hits and two walks while striking out six during a 94-pitch outing.

Rollins has consecutive pitching victories over McLennan, plus league wins over Panola and Northeast.

NC backed him with two first-inning runs and single tallies in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Chad Ricker’s two-out single to centerfield scored Ethan Ruiz with the game’s first run, and an error on the play enabled Logan Letney to score.

In the third, Ruiz led off with a double and scored on Dawson Woods’ two-out single to right field.

Navarro raised its lead to 4-0 in the fourth as Weston Symes reached on an error, moved to third on Cash Rugely’s single and scored on Ruiz’ infield single.

A wild pitch during Riley Lambert’s at-bat in the fifth enabled Letney to cross home plate with the Bulldogs’ final run. Consecutive singles by Letney and Wood set up the scoring opportunity.

GAME 2 – Navarro 9, Northeast 3
The Bulldogs completed the Sunday doubleheader sweep and the three-game weekend set.

Navarro took a 2-1 lead when Alex Vergara singled home Cash Rugely, and later scored the go-ahead run on NTCC pitcher Sawyer Smallwood’s balk.

Rugely and Ruiz stroked second-inning sacrifice flyouts to account for two more runs. The rally began with consecutive singles by Woods and Tallon Heine, plus Weston Symes was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Run-scoring singles by Symes and Heine highlighted Navarro’s three-run third.

Blake Anderson, the first of three relievers to work after starter Jake Combs, got credit for the pitching victory.
