COLUMBUS, Ga. – Navarro Softball participates in the National Fast-Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic March 8-10 at The South Commons Complex. Coach Jessica Karenke-Burke’s Bulldogs (11-7) will compete with 18 other squads during the NJCAA-version of the Leadoff Classic. Weekend weather forecasts issued Wednesday call for 70-degree high temperatures under cloudy skies with a 20 percent chance of thundershowers daily, but that won't stop the Bulldogs in their quest to reach a significant milestone for their head coach. 'Coach K' will try to secure a 600th career head-coaching victory during the classic.  Now in her 18th Navarro season, she is two wins away -- with a record of 598-339 (.638).  Karenke-Burke's led the Bulldogs to six Region XIV Conference Championships and 14 post-season tournament appearances. The 19-team field includes 11 teams ranked Tuesday in the first regular-season NJCAA Polls -- 10 that were listed in NJCAA Preseason Polls released in late January.  The group includes four Division I entries: unbeaten, top-ranked Florida SouthWestern State, No. 9 Wallace State of Hanceville, Ala., No. 14 Gulf Coast State, and No. 16 Seminole State College of Florida.  Six squads among Division II’s Top 10 will compete, including top-ranked, defending national champion Jones County, Ms., No....

Region XIV East Zone-leading Navarro baseball is scheduled to travel Thursday to Paris to face the Dragons at H.L. 'Hub' Hollis Field in the first game of another conference weekend series. The teams return to Corsicana for a noon Saturday doubleheader at Perry D. Graham Field, weather permitting. The Navarro-Paris series begins just two days after the Dragons and Panola finished their delayed opening-weekend series Tuesday.  Panola, a 3-2 single-game winner last Friday, took Tuesday's doubleheader at Paris by scores of 6-1 and 8-0. Although Navarro's non-conference single game Tuesday at Galveston was cancelled by wet field conditions and inclement weather, coach Matt Podjenski's Bulldogs remained on regular conference scheduling.  Navarro (10-7) barreled out of the gates with a three-game sweep of Angelina, taking a doubleheader Saturday from the Roadrunners. Saturday's wins were 4-3 in the seven-inning first game, and 11-8 in the nine-inning nightcap. Carson Rollins pitched a complete-game three-hitter in the opener. Jose Gonzales slugged a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Stacy Bailey's two-out double to centerfield scored Mason Holt with the tiebreaking run. The Bulldogs overcame a 3-0 first-inning deficit to win. In the nightcap, the Bulldogs used a hits-batsmen, an Angelina error and singles from Cash Rugely, Jonathan Little, Esteban...

By MIKE MONTFORT  --  Sophomore Day, conference championship and tournament top seed all rolled into one big post-game celebration Saturday. Navarro basketball (23-6/13-5) got 57 points from its sophomore core during a 78-52 romp past Panola for the Region XIV East Zone Championship and the top seed for next week's post-season tournament at Shreveport, La. Coach Michael Landers' 24th-ranked Bulldogs, coming off a season-low 38 percent shooting Thursday and a shorter-than-routine game-preparation, could do no wrong Saturday. They emptied an ammunition-belt of 12 three-pointers, and, on the other end, limited an opponent to 60 points or less for the third time in the last four outings. For only the fourth time this season and first since Game 8 on November 20, Xavier Davenport pumped in a game-high 20 points as the Bulldogs improved their record at Lewis Orr Court to 13-3. 'X' marked the spot, and deadly Davenport sank four three-pointers. He set early tones by nailing Navarro's first three in each half. Davenport, one of seven Bulldogs to score 25-plus in games this season, turned in his most productive scoresheet since he canned 33 in November 20 in a three-overtime win at Temple against the 24-6 Leopards, who qualified for the Region V Tournament.
