HILLSBORO -- Unbeaten Navarro survived yet another one-point game, but claimed its first road victory Tuesday with a 79-78 triumph over Hill College at The Bob Bullock Sports Center. Dondre Griffin sank a team-high 19 points  that included four three-pointers to pace the Bulldogs.  Jahlil Nails added 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds.  Odessey Keeling returned with a 16-point, six-assist game, plus a steal and a blocked shot for the 5-foot-10 freshman guard. More key contributions came up front from Emmanuel Egbuta, who pitched in eight points, cleared seven rebounds and blocked a shot.  Kelvon Fuller threaded seven points and grabbed another eight rebounds. Coach Michael Landers' Bulldogs (3-0) shot 47 percent from the floor (32-of-67), and 32 percent from the perimeter (9-of-28), The Bulldogs host the annual two-day Lewis Orr Classic beginning Friday.  NC will face off against the Fort Hood Phantom Warriors at 7 pm Friday and against El Centro at 3 pm Saturday....

HILLSBORO --  Unbeatens Navarro and Hill renew their neighboring-county rival Tuesday as the Bulldogs travel west of Highway 22 for their first road game of the season. Coach Michael Landers' Bulldogs posted back-to-back, season-opening wins at home this weekend.  Navarro, featuring returning sophomore Emmanuel Egbuta with a mostly freshman cast, came through with an 84-60 Friday victory over Creating Young Minds (CYM) Academy of Irving.  The Bulldogs followed it up Saturday with a 102-101 overtime win over Lone Star-Cy Fair's Falcons. Tuesday's Navarro-Hill matchup is scheduled for a 7 pm tipoff.  Hill returns the favor by playing in Corsicana November 20. The Bulldogs will return home to host the two-day Lewis Orr Classic that begins on Friday at the K. and Ida Wolens Special Events Center. In the Orr Classic, Navarro face Fort Hood at 7 pm Friday and El Centro at 3 pm Saturday...

Coach Michael Landers' Navarro Bulldog basketball faces the North Lake College Blazers in a 6 pm Monday scrimmage at the Wolens Center. North Lake, a Dallas Community College District school in Irving, recently drew the NJCAA Division III Preseason No. 1 ranking. Monday's scrimmage will be the Bulldogs' last official one before they open their regular-season play here Friday against CYM Academy and Saturday against Lone Star-Cy Fair....

TYLER -- Region XIV Basketball Coaches Preseason Polls were released Tuesday at the 20th Annual Media Tipoff here at Wagstaff Gymnasium. Coach Michael Landers' Navarro Bulldogs were picked to finish fourth in the East Zone behind Trinity Valley and Panola.  TVCC and Panola each totaled seven first-place ballots. San Jacinto-Central, beginning its final season, was picked to win the South Zone.  The Ravens totaled 12 first-place ballots.  Second-place Angelina and fourth-place Blinn each received first-place votes. NASHVILLE, Tn -- Navarro College and Tennessee State University graduate Wayne Martin signed his first contract to play professional basketball with Prishtina BC in the Kosovo-SuperLeague. "I don't think I've ever been more proud of an individual than I am of Wayne Martin," TSU head coach Dana Ford said. "He's a college graduate of Tennessee State University and now he's a professional basketball player.  All the credit belongs to Wayne and his mom and their willingness to allow us to help him become who he is today." Martin starred for the Tigers for the last two seasons, helping lead TSU to back-to-back winning seasons. After transferring to TSU from Navarro College, the 6-foot-7 forward put up 12.8 points and 9.1 rebounds per game in his two seasons in Nashville. "Coach (Dana) Ford got me ready for the real world and for professional basketball," Martin said. Martin led  TSU with 14.4 points per game en route to Second Team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors in 2016-17. He dominated on the glass, finishing second in the OVC with 9.2 rebounds per game and tying for third in the conference with 10 double-doubles as a senior.
