The Navarro Bulldogs try to close their fall semester on a positive note Tuesday when they host the Louisiana Christian Prep Academy Disciples in a 7 pm non-conference game at the Wolens Center. Coach Michael Landers' Bulldogs (9-2/2-1) will be searching for their 10th win in 12 outings. Navarro is coming off a streaky 69-65 conference win here Wednesday over the Lamar State-Port Arthur Seahawks. Jahlil Nails returned to the court after injury and a five-game absence to pump in a game-high 23 points that featured 6-of-8 shooting beyond the three-point arc.  Freshman Kelvon Fuller turned in a personal-high double-double with 20 points from 8-of-9 shooting inside, plus 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs, which improved to 6-1 at the Wolens Center this season, had runs of 23, 7 and 10 points, while the Seahawks countered with unanswered runs of 14, 11, and 10 and kept the pressure on Navarro. LSC-PA hit its first two baskets and took a 5-0 lead, but went pointless for almost 10 minutes in the first half.  Nevertheless, the Seahawks battled to tie the game at 59 with 2:47 left. Dondre Griffin came off the bench and provided a season-high 23 points as Navarro opened Region XIV men's basketball conference play Wednesday with a 69-60 win over the 16th-ranked San Jacinto Ravens here at The Wolens Center. Coach Michael Landers' Bulldogs (8-1) hit the floor running, building as much as an 18-point lead within the first eight minutes of the game.  Though challenged twice down the stretch when San Jacinto pulled within three points, the Bulldogs never flinched and recorded an important crossover win against a team selected by the coaches to finish atop the South Zone. Griffin sank 8-of-13 shots, including 5-of-9 beyond the three-point line.  The Raleigh, NC, sophomore, with help from guard Kahssian Kay, ignited a runaway start and propelled Navarro into a 26-8 lead with left corner three-pointers on consecutive trips. Then, Griffin surfaced at crunch time after the Ravens cut a 12-point Bulldog lead (60-48) with a nine-point run that featured seven free-throws.   Griffin hit both ends of a one-and-one for a 64-57 lead with 4:13 to go, and capitalized with a layup at 2:21 on another trip to give NC breathing room (66-57). Navarro basketball concluded a successful two-win weekend at The 7th Annual Lewis Orr Classic with wins Friday over Fort Hood (86-77) and Saturday over Cy Fair Learning Center (97-78) at the Wolens SEC. Coach Michael Landers' Bulldogs remain unbeaten after five games, and are off to the program's best start since the 2009-2010 season. In Saturday's dominating win over CFLC, the Bulldogs shot 44.7 percent of their 85 shots from the floor, placed five in double-figure scoring for the second straight outing, and cleared a whopping 65 rebounds.  Of the Bulldogs' 65 boards, 26 were of the offensive variety. Navarro got double-doubles from freshmen Keion Epps and Darron Barnes,  Epps, from Inkster, Mi.,  totaled 19 points and a team-high 20 rebounds with four blocked shots -- all coming during one sequence of second-half action.  Of his 20 boards, 13 were offensive. Barnes, who had scored a total 17 points in his first four games, responded with an 18-point, 19-rebound contest. Emmanuel Egbuta pumped in 16 points from 6-of-11 shooting with seven rebounds for the Bulldogs, which battled from behind to take a 51-49 halftime lead they never relinquished. HILLSBORO -- Unbeaten Navarro survived yet another one-point game, but claimed its first road victory Tuesday with a 79-78 triumph over Hill College at The Bob Bullock Sports Center. Dondre Griffin sank a team-high 19 points  that included four three-pointers to pace the Bulldogs.  Jahlil Nails added 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds.  Odessey Keeling returned with a 16-point, six-assist game, plus a steal and a blocked shot for the 5-foot-10 freshman guard. More key contributions came up front from Emmanuel Egbuta, who pitched in eight points, cleared seven rebounds and blocked a shot.  Kelvon Fuller threaded seven points and grabbed another eight rebounds.
