JACKSONVILLE -- Coach Michael Landers' Navarro Bulldogs drew the No. 7 seed and will play 10th-seeded Lamar State-Port Arthur in first-round play Tuesday at the Region XIV Men's Basketball Tournament. The Bulldogs face coach Lance Madison's Seahawks (7-12/14-16) in the 6 pm game at John Alexander Gym.  The Jacksonville ISD Gymnasium formerly was known as the R.E. 'Bob' and Vivian Smith Gym at Lon Morris College. The Bulldogs (18-11/9-10) slipped into the No. 7 seed Saturday by completing a season sweep from the Bossier Parish Cavaliers.  Navarro scored an 84-80 win at the BPCC Health and Physical Education Building, while Kilgore lost the seeding tiebreaker advantage it had claimed here Wednesday as it dropped a 76-69 decision to Trinity Valley at Master's Gymnasium. Navarro and Lamar State-Port Arthur will be meeting for the second time this season, exactly three months to the day they met in zone crossover play at The Wolens Special Events Center in Corsicana.  Both teams are worlds-apart different now than they were on December 6, and that will make for an intriguing matchup when they collide Tuesday on a neutral court. After starting 8-14 and 2-10 in conference, the Seahawks now are arguably the league's hottest squad -- and...

TYLER -- Trey Pulliam's 16-foot wing jumper with :01.4 left lifted Navarro over the 14th-ranked Tyler Apaches Saturday at Floyd Wagstaff Gym. Coach Michael Landers' Bulldogs (17-10/8-9) snapped a three-game losing streak and handed the Apaches (23-5/13-5) their second conference loss within four days, but TJC remained in sole possession of second place in the East Zone as the battle continues for Region XIV Tournament seeding. Pulliam, who finished with 10 points, produced go-ahead baskets inside regulation's final 0:24. Dondre Griffin scored 20 second-half points of his 21 total to keep the Bulldogs in the game, but it was Pulliam who stepped up twice for tiebreaking shots for Navarro. The Bulldogs led 66-62 with about a minute left when TJC's 5-11 sophomore point guard Brian Warren hit two free throws.  Sophomore guard TiAndre Jackson stole a Navarro pass and fed Warren who found 6-3 freshman guard Cameron Johnson for a jumper with :51 that tied it at 66. Pulliam hit a go-ahead layup at 0:24. Tyler's 6-8 sophomore forward Tajuan Agee took a Warren feed for a game-tying dunk with :14 remaining. Agee led TJC with 18 points and 12 rebounds; Jackson and Johnson each netted 10.  Pulliam had 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and four...

By MIKE MONTFORT Sixth-ranked TVCC awakened during the middle stage of the second half when it put together a five-minute run of 15 unanswered points and overcame Navarro. The Cardinals’ eighth straight win, coupled with Tyler’s 88-75 loss to Panola, sealed the East Zone regular-season championship and assured TVCC of the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Region XIV Tournament at Jacksonville. Against Navarro, the Cardinals fell behind 41-33 at halftime and trailed 54-47 with 12:25 left.  That’s when 6-10 freshman Robinson Idehen, 6-7 sophomore Andres Ibarguen and 6-11 Jaime Echenique keyed the 15-point run and used their size advantage to overpower Navarro inside. All finished with double-doubles.  Idehen scored 11 points cleared 10 rebounds; Ibarguen matched his regular-season game totals of 10 points and 10 boards; and Echenique came off the bench with 16 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. A 46-rebound game and a 46-29 second-half scoring advantage helped the Redbirds remain unbeaten in 12 road games and claim their 16th league win in 17 tries.  Navarro 16 points from Dondre Griffin and 15 from Jahlil Nails. The loss was a third straight for Navarro and its seventh in its last nine games. Navarro plays Saturday at Tyler before closing out its home...

By MIKE PHILLIPS / Corsicana Sun Combined With Other Sources It’s still there for Navarro’s Bulldogs, the road to the postseason and a chance to win the Region XIV Tournament next month. It just seems like that road is wrought with pain and full of too many nights like Wednesday when the Dawgs lost another heartbreaker -- ironically what could be their most heart-breaking loss of the year -- on Valentine’s Day. [caption id="attachment_912237" align="alignright" width="322"] Keion Epps blocks a shot (Keith Speer Photo)[/caption] It seemed they had this one, had it so many times in so many ways, but in the end it was Paris that somehow managed to steal this tense, up-and-down game that neither team could get a grasp on with a 75-73 overtime victory at the Wolens SEC. Darius Williams, who scored all of Paris’ 11 points in overtime, dropped in two free throws with 2.9 seconds left to give the Dragons the victory. Had he missed the bus or stayed in Paris for a Valentine’s date, Navarro would have rolled to an easy win. But this game was full of woulda-coulda-shouldas for the Dawgs, who would have walked away with a victory in regulation if they had just made a few...
