Director of Navarro College Choir
Nyadia Thorpe is thrilled to be with Navarro College Choir! She comes to Corsicana with many years of experience in choral music, having taught in Dallas ISD, Duncanville ISD, Midlothian ISD and Waxahachie ISD.
As a student, she graduated from Dallas ISD in the Arts programming at W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy and Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts. She has been blessed with mentors, coaches, and educators who value experience. They provided her with experiences that have sustained her vision of being a conductor and impacting lives through the art of performing vocal music. Her studies in undergrad took place at the University of Texas at Arlington where she sang in the Chamber Chorus, and the A Cappella Chorus, as well as held roles in the Opera Workshop courses and performed overseas in parts of Europe with the vocal ensemble and she was awarded solo in Mozart’s Requiem.
She graduated with a Bachelors in Music Education. After teaching a few years and gaining more experience, she attended Southern Methodist University to obtain a Masters in Music Education with hours in Choral Conducting. She enjoys studying her craft and considers herself a lifelong learner. She attends workshops over the summer and is Kodaly Level 1 Certified. Mrs. Thorpe has also obtained her Principal Certification from Stephen F. Austin State University. Mrs. Thorpe has adopted the coaching approach in her teaching, and through the years her students have endowed her with the title of Coach Thorpe. She decided to keep it and through her creative approach to teaching voice, her choirs have shown tremendous growth, exceeded expectations, and consistently earn superior and outstanding ratings and awards at contests and festivals across the state of Texas. Outside of school, she is active in her community, conducts a community chorus, holds a very small private voice studio, and serves in the church where she conducts the music ministry. Her church choir has had the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall with a 300-voice choir performing Handel’s Messiah, and they frequently will host the community chorus bringing together singers from across the city.
She also assists her husband, Jeff, in ministry as they build up and encourage other leaders by providing them with a safe place to plug in and replenish to go out to serve and lead in their respective communities. Together they have three boys: Vincent, Caden and Caius. She holds memberships in the Texas Music Educators Association, American Choral Directors Association, Texas Choral Directors Association, and the Texas Two-Year College Choir Directors Association.
