Program Flexibility

Classes are offered every semester, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m..

 

Expertise

Navarro College uses instructors who are experts in their field. Instructors are members of the Navarro College family and include full-time and adjunct faculty. All are experienced firefighters either currently employed or retired. Each instructor is interviewed and chosen based on their knowledge and command of subject matter.

These resources ensure high-quality instruction throughout the program.

 

College Credit

Most importantly, the Navarro College Fire Academy offers college academic credit. All Fire Academy classes are academic classes and students finish with 24 credit hours. Credit hours can give graduates an advantage when searching for employment.

 

Degree

Fire Academy credit hours contribute toward the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Fire Science.

 

Tuition/Fees

• Estimated tuition for the Fire Academy: $3,900 (based on out-of-district rates)

• In-District (Navarro County) tuition may be lower

Drug Screen/Background Check

All Fire Academy students must:

1. Pass a 10-panel drug screen

2. Pass a criminal background check.

Both are administered by Navarro College. Failure in either will result in student’s dismissal from the program.

 

Social Security Card

A Social Security number is required for the Texas Commission on Fire Protection Certification.

 

Books

Books are available at the Navarro College Bookstore in Waxahachie.

• IFSTA - Essential of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations, 6th Edition (ISBN 978-0-13-314080-4). $96

• IFSTA - Hazardous Materials for First Responders, 5th Edition (ISBN 978-087939613-8). $93

 

Uniforms

Uniforms are required to be worn daily throughout the Academy. Navarro College Fire uniform:

• Red-collared shirt with program logo for class (available in the bookstore). Approximately $20

• Red T-shirts for workout (available in the bookstore). Approximately $14

• Dark blue Emergency Medical Services (EMS) pants (w/belt loops)

• Black belt

• Black polishable boots

• Navy workout shorts

• Running shoes

• Navy blue hooded jacket (available in the bookstore). Approximately $31

 

Bunker Gear

RENTAL IS AVAILABLE THROUGH OUTSIDE VENDOR (Approximately $900)

Required bunker gear includes:

• Helmet

• Hood

• Coat

• Pants

• Suspenders

• Boots

• Gloves.

Bunker gear must be National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1851 approved and inspected by Navarro College Fire Academy (NCFA) Coordinator. Documentation will be required stating the equipment meets the criteria required by the 2008 NFPA Standard 1851 advanced inspection.

Rental gear is available through various vendors online. Two Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) vendors are:

• GCS Firefighter Merchandise

• LION TotalCare

Bunker Gear will be needed by the second week of class.

 

Additional Fees

Some fees are due to individual agencies upon successful completion of the class:

• Fingerprinting: $41.45
