ADULT AND SECONDARY EDUCATION

Procedure


LIFELONG LEARNING

In recognition of the principle that true education is a lifelong experience, Navarro College offers the following programs:

  1. Continuing/Workforce Education

  2. Community Service

  3. Adult Education/Literacy (AEL)

  4. English as a Second Language (ESL)

  5. High School Equivalency (HSE) Classes

  6. EL Civics/Citizenship Classes

  7. Career Pathways

 


CONTINUING/WORKFORCE EDUCATION

The college shall offer credit and noncredit courses designed to fill gaps in a person’s education and to enable the employed person to enhance skills or to cross-train for other occupational fields. 

  1. Schedule and Enrollment

    Eligible courses will be identified on the Continuing Education website. Enrollment can be completed through the Continuing Education Office with completion of a Continuing Education registration request form.

  2. Continuing Education Units (CEU's)

    Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) will be awarded upon successful completion of concurrent classes. CEU transcripts may be purchased online or in person by visiting the cashier’s office at any Navarro College location. Continuing Education students will be expected to participate in class, turn in all assignments in a timely manner, be prepared with all required materials, and take all tests as required by the instructor. Students must meet all attendance requirements to receive CEU credit.

 


COMMUNITY SERVICE

The college shall offer courses designed to prepare students “for living,” in contrast to “making a living”—i.e., courses intended to prepare for responsible citizenship, to increase competence in communication, to improve understanding of his or her cultural heritage, physical and biological environment to aid in achieving a balanced personal and social adjustment, and to provide an opportunity for life enrichment. Vocational enrichment courses shall also be offered.

 


ADULT EDUCATION AND LITERACY (AEL)

AEL is a program that provides instruction to adults whose ability to compute, speak, read, or write the English language is at or below a level that substantially impairs their ability to find or retain employment commensurate with their real ability.

 


ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

ESL is a program for limited English proficient students who have a focus on improving English communication skills such as speaking, reading, writing, and listening. These classes are designed/structured to improve fluency and pronunciation, expand vocabulary and educate on coping in American society. 

 


HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY (HSE) (FORMERLY GED) CLASSES

This program is designed for the adult learner who wishes to strengthen reading, writing, math or life-coping skills and go on to obtain their High School Equivalency (HSE). The program offers basic instruction in reading, math, and/or language. Individuals are pre-tested to determine reading and math entry levels.

 


EL CIVICS/CITIZENSHIP CLASSES

Students will acquire the skills and knowledge needed in preparation for the Naturalization exam for Citizenship. Students will receive guidance in completion of the N-400 application. They will also be dual enrolled in small business management classes through Continuing Education.

 


CAREER PATHWAYS

This program combines occupational skills training with Adult Education and Literacy services to increase the educational and career advancement of participants. Individual instruction is based on the student’s program of study for an in-demand career. Assessment and advising is also a part of the program as assistance in employability, eligibility of students, and job placement is provided upon completion of the program.
