Attendance and Academic Requirements
Satisfactory Attendance and Academic Progress Requirements for Residence Life
The Navarro College Board of Trustees has adopted the following requirements for all students residing in residence halls. This policy intents to ensure success for students during the semester. The fifteen-semester credit hour (15 SCH) minimum enrollment is designed to allow students to maintain twelve semester credit hours (12 SCH) so that students may continue to be eligible to reside in the residence hall and maintain financial aid eligibility if it becomes necessary to drop a course.
Enrollment in 15 SCH while Maintaining 12 SCH
Students residing in Navarro College residence halls are required to maintain full-time academic enrollment during the fall and spring semesters. Residents must enroll in a minimum of fifteen (15) semester credit hours during the 16-week fall and spring semesters and must maintain at least twelve (12) semester credit hours throughout the duration of the term.
Residents enrolled in alternative academic terms must meet the following minimum enrollment requirements:
-
Mini semester: minimum of three (3) semester credit hours
-
8-week fall or spring term: minimum of six (6) semester credit hours
-
Summer term(s): minimum of six (6) semester credit hours
Students who drop below the required enrollment level at any point during the semester may be subject to review of their housing eligibility and may be required to vacate campus housing.
Exceptions to this policy may be granted only with prior approval from the appropriate college office and may include circumstances such as:
-
Documented disability accommodations
-
Graduating seniors in their final semester
-
Approved academic program requirements
-
Other extenuating circumstances reviewed on a case-by-case basis
Students requesting an exception must obtain written approval from the Office of Housing and Residence Life in coordination with Academic Advising or the appropriate academic office.
Attendance Requirement
Students residing in Navarro College residence halls are expected to attend and actively participate in all enrolled courses in accordance with the Navarro College Attendance Policy as outlined in the Navarro College Catalog. Excessive absenteeism is defined as absences equivalent to two (2) weeks of instruction during a sixteen (16) week semester.
To promote student success and identify concerns early, faculty members complete an Early Intervention report during the semester. These reports may identify students who are experiencing academic concerns, including but not limited to:
-
Excessive absences
-
Missing or incomplete assignments
-
Low test or exam scores
-
Lack of course participation
Early Intervention reports are shared with Success Coaches to provide timely support and intervention for students experiencing academic difficulty.
In addition, Residence Life periodically pulls enrollment reports to review the semester credit hours in which housing students are currently enrolled to ensure compliance with residence hall enrollment requirements. Students who fall below the required credit hour enrollment may be contacted by Residence Life staff and required to correct their enrollment status.
Faculty members also maintain the authority to drop a student from a course at any time during the semester in accordance with the course syllabus and institutional policies if the student fails to meet course participation or attendance requirements.
Students who remain non-compliant with attendance, academic engagement, or enrollment expectations after intervention may be subject to disciplinary action within the Residence Life program, which may include warnings, probation, or removal from campus housing.
Residence Life students not attending class or with excessive absences must move out of the residence hall within 48 hours.
Grade Point Average (GPA) Requirement
Upon entrance to the Residence Life/Housing Program at Navarro College, each resident must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 1.75 for their first semester of residence. Thereafter, all residents are required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in order to remain eligible to return to the Residence Life/Housing Program for the following semester.
Students who fail to maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA will be placed on Housing Probation and will be required to sign a Housing Probation Contract. This contract outlines specific expectations designed to support the student’s academic success.
Requirements outlined in the Housing Probation Contract may include, but are not limited to:
-
Regular participation in tutoring services
-
Attendance in all enrolled classes
-
Completion of all academic assignments
-
Scheduled meetings with designated campus staff
-
Participation in academic support programs or workshops
Failure to comply with the expectations outlined in the Housing Probation Contract may result in additional disciplinary action, including possible removal from the Residence Life/Housing Program.
Course Load Requirement
Students residing in residence halls at Navarro College are expected to enroll primarily in courses that provide direct, face-to-face instruction with faculty in a classroom or laboratory setting on one of the Navarro College campus locations.
To support engagement with the campus community and academic success, residents must ensure that at least two-thirds (2/3) of their course load consists of traditional lecture or laboratory courses delivered in a face-to-face format during the sixteen-week fall and spring semesters.
Online coursework may be considered and permitted based on the student’s declared degree plan, course availability, and scheduling needs. Some academic programs may require or strongly recommend online courses to meet program requirements or maintain academic progress.
Exceptions to this policy may be approved by the Director of Retention and Success or their designee.
Students who fail to meet the course modality requirement for two consecutive semesters may not be permitted to continue living in campus housing. If a student’s course schedule falls below the required face-to-face course load at any point during the semester, and the student has been permitted to participate in the Residence Life program, the student may be notified and may risk probation or eviction.
The Residence Life Department strives to provide a supportive living and learning environment that encourages academic engagement and student success. The purpose of this policy is to promote meaningful interaction between students and faculty while supporting residents in making steady academic progress toward completion of their program at Navarro College.
