Leave of Absence for Pregnant and Parenting Students
Procedure
Leave of Absence for Pregnant and Parenting Students
Students who are pregnant, have a pregnancy-related condition, or are parenting may choose to voluntarily take a leave of absence from a Navarro College education program or activity.
Under Title IX, students may take a leave for the period of time deemed medically necessary by their licensed healthcare provider due to pregnancy or a pregnancy-related condition. If a student qualifies for leave under Texas Education Code Section 51.982, Navarro College must permit the student to take voluntary leave under that policy instead, if the student so chooses.
In accordance with Texas Education Code Section 51.982 and Texas Administrative Code, Title 19, Part 1, Chapter 4, Subchapter X, Section 4.375, Navarro College will permit—but not require—a student who is pregnant, experiencing a pregnancy-related condition(s), and/or parenting to take a leave of absence for a minimum of one semester without showing a medical need.
If in good academic standing at the time the student takes a leave of absence, the student may return to their degree or certificate program without being required to reapply for admission so long as the program still exists at the institution and the program would still meet accreditation standards. The institution may require that the student fulfills revised requirements of the program if the program in effect when the student returns has changed.
Students seeking leave should contact the Navarro College Parenting Liaison at 903-875-7738 or by email to begin the process and receive guidance on documentation and academic planning.
Important Considerations:
- Students in licensure or credentialing programs governed by external organizations must adhere to the completion timelines set by those organizations. These students are strongly encouraged to contact their program director for specific requirements and/or guidelines.
- Supporting documentation may be required by specific programs and/or if the leave of absence will exceed one (1) semester.
- All leave of absence requests will be reviewed by a committee including representatives from the Registrar’s Office, Office of Accessibility and Accommodations, Veterans Affairs, Financial Aid, the Executive Director of Student Services, the relevant program/department chair (or a rotating core curriculum chair for General Studies), and the Executive Dean/Director overseeing the program. After considering the request and all relevant information, the committee will render a decision. Appeals of the committee’s decision follow the same process as grade or program dismissal appeals (see Board Policy Section FKD.1 and Board Policy Section FKD.2) but chaired by the Vice President of Student Success.
- It is strongly recommended that students consult with Financial Aid before requesting a leave of absence to understand any potential impact on their eligibility. Students may contact the Financial Aid office at 903-875-7400 or by email.
Requesting a Leave of Absence (Procedure)
Students who are pregnant, experiencing pregnancy-related condition(s), and/or parenting and need to request a leave of absence should complete and submit the Pregnant and Parenting Students Leave of Absence Request Form.

Student Meeting with the Financial Aid Office and/or the Navarro College Foundation
In accordance with the Texas Education Code Section 51.982, Navarro College will implement policies and procedures to ensure that a student is informed of possible impacts to their financial aid or scholarships. Navarro College encourages students to meet with the Financial Aid Office and/or the Navarro College Foundation (i.e., scholarship office) before the student takes a leave of absence. Students can contact the Financial Aid Office at 903.875.7400 or financial.aid@navarrocollege.edu and/or the Navarro College Foundation at 903.875.7591 or foundation@navarrocollege.edu to schedule a meeting with the appropriate staff member(s).
Return After a Leave of Absence
When the student returns to Navarro College’s education program or activity, the student must be reinstated to the academic status and as practicable, to the extracurricular status that the student held when the voluntary leave began. Navarro College will ensure that a student in good academic standing at the time a leave of absence commences may return to their degree or certificate program in good academic standing and not be required to reapply for admission so long as the program still exists at Navarro College and the program would still meet accreditation standards. Navarro College may require that the student fulfills revised requirements of the program if the program in effect when the student returns has changed.
